Apart from advancements in photomechanical dies and platemaking, modern letterpress technology has largely remained stuck in the past somewhere between the 1920's and mid 1960's. This has left letterpress a slow and laborious process.
Frustrated, the aproned team at Cranky Pressman set out to change all this. Introducing computer enhanced letterpress, bringing the speed and precision of digital devices to letterpress capabilities and thus bringing letterpress firmly into the late 20th Century!
What does Digi-Letterpress technology mean for designers?
Simple, these new cutting-edge methods will virtually eliminate the worst aspects of letterpress print that niggle many customers in their pursuit of graphic perfection. The most dramatic improvement will be the unparalleled control our pressman will now have over impression weight.
It is a problem almost as old as Gutenberg himself. How to achieve the attractive bite impression (commonly known as press or punch) into the paper surface without having unsightly bite show-through or bruising on the opposite side of the sheet.
Computer measurement now allows us to precisely control impression depths down to a micron in size. So, if you would like an impression that's exactly 360 microns deep, we can do that. What about 925 microns? Yes we have that covered too!
This is great news for the advancement of graphic design execution. However, we discovered that it's not just the overall strength of the press-hit that causes bruising problems but also the lack of adjustments that previously could not be made during the hit itself.
Our new system goes further by not only monitoring the initial point of contact but also calculating and adjusting the weight at the end of the impression itself. We've discovered it's this endpoint, or follow-through, where paper bruising damage occurs. Digital assistance means we can now begin each letterpress impression with a greater weight but back off and use lesser pounds per square inch (psi) towards the latter portion of the hit thus eliminating all bite show-through.
In layman's terms, Digi-Letterpress technology allows us to pull the punch on each press hit and eradicate letterpress bruising on paper stock even as thin as 80 lb. cover.
This is just the beginning of where technological advancements are taking us. We've also employed electronic ink injection systems to replace traditional fountain ink delivery. This means the mottling and unevenness commonly associated with relief printing are gone forever, blurring the lines between offset lithography and letterpress printing.
